Amerikan asıllı Yahudi Elsie Slonim, I. Dünya Savaşı yıllarında doğdu. Uzun yıllardır Kıbrıs’ta yaşayan iş insanı David Slonim ile 1939 yılında Amerika’da tanışarak evlendi ve ardından Kıbrıs’a yerleşti.
Bir Yahudi olarak II. Amerika, Avusturya, Kıbrıs ve İsrail arasında geçen yaşamını anlattığı ilk kitabı Lemons from Paradise 2012 yılında yayımlandı. İkinci kitabı Ahead of Time ise 2017’de okurla buluştu.

Elsie Slonim, an American-born Jewish woman, was born during the years of the First World War. In 1939, she met and married David Slonim, a businessman who had been living in Cyprus for many years, and subsequently moved to the island.
As a Jewish woman, Elsie experienced the devastation of the Second World War at a deeply personal level. During the war, she lost all of her relatives, with the exception of her mother, father, and sister, at the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland. In 1941, like other Jews living in Cyprus, Elsie and her husband were sent by the British authorities to Palestine, the territory that would later become Israel. Although they attempted to build a new life there, they eventually returned to Cyprus.
I first met Elsie in 2015, when she was 98 years old. At the time, she was living in her home within the military Buffer Zone that has separated the two communities of Cyprus since the conflict of 1974. Access to the area was highly restricted, and visiting Elsie required special permission from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as passage through military checkpoints. Having lost her husband and her two children between 2005 and 2011, Elsie continued to live there as the only civilian resident of the Buffer Zone.
Her first book, Lemons from Paradise, published in 2012, recounts a life shaped by movement between the United States, Austria, Cyprus, and Israel. Her second book, Ahead of Time, was published in 2017.
Having witnessed wars, displacement, personal loss, and political division across more than a century, Elsie Slonim passed away on 26 January 2021 at the age of 103. She left behind not only the story of an extraordinary individual life, but also a powerful testimony to the twentieth century’s histories of war, displacement, memory, and belonging.
